SOS Global Warming

Global Warming

DO YOU KNOW?
• Eating 1 hamburger = cutting 6 sq ms of forest.
• Eat 4 burgers= cutting forest the size of a Classroom.
• Eat 6 burgers =cutting forest the size of school Stage.
• Eat 37 burgers = cutting forest the size of School Hall.

Global contributors of Green house gas emissions

Stop Deforestation / Start Forestation
• To date, 50% the World’s Rainforest is lost.
• If 30% more is deforested, the remaining cannot survive.
• Deforestation Rate: [50 million Acres per year]
- World wide Deforestation Rate: 16 football field / min.
- Amazon Deforestation Rate: 7 football field / min

‘70 % of previously forested land in Amazon rainforest was changed into pastures for cattle gazing and Feed crops covered a large part of the remaining. ‘– UN report

Deforestation in Australia:
Of the 100 million hectares of land area that is being deforested:
- Animal farming: 70 million hectares
- Grow crops: 25 million hectares
- Occupied by people: 2 million hectares

Livestock Farming

UN Report: Livestock industry produces:
• 18% of Global Green house gas emissions
• 37% of Global Methane [23 times CO2 GWP] ,
• 65% of Global NO2 [296 times CO2 GWP] .

• “Raising animals generates more greenhouse gases [18%] than all the 760 million cars and trucks in the world combined [14%]”- UN Report.

• Producing 1 kg of beef generates 36.4 kg of CO2
• Producing 1 kg of beans generates 0.6 kg of CO2
• Meat industry requires lots of refrigeration and transport.
• It is grossly energy-inefficient!!!
• Switching to a vegetarian diet reduces 1.5 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

· Tons of Manures from livestock farms flow into underground water and into seas, causing large area of Dead zone.

• Food fed to animals: 75% of the world’s Soy Bean, 50% of the world’s Corn and 36% of the world’s Rice.
• In 2007, Food fed to animals : 760 million tons
• In 2007, World hunger figure: 900 million people
• Food needed to feed all the hungry for 1 year: 12 million tons

Eat less meat/Eat more vegetables.

Dr Rajendra Pachauri’s, Chairman of IPCC, proposal :
“Give up meat for one day [per week] at least initially, and decrease it from there”
